How To Throw A Great Party Without Really Trying

So you want to throw a party. No matter what the occasion (or lack thereof), parties aren’t really that difficult. In fact, making it fun is a state of mind and knowing a few good pointers. Even when you’re inviting new people over that you’ve only just met, throwing the right kind of party should be no sweat.

For a casual, intimate gathering, you don’t need to go to a lot of trouble. The essentials – food and drink and something fun to do – are all you really need to worry about. Decorations, good for more formal parties like Halloween, Christmas, etc… may warrant some festive decorations, but for a casual get together, decorations are optional.

For an easy menu, consider ordering in. Pizza delivery places will often cut you a deal if you are ordering several pies. Alternatively, Chinese food is a good option. You can get several large portions of different items on the menu, so there will be sure to be something for everyone.

It’s a healthy world these days – a lot of people are drinking water and vitamin-enriched juices. While the latter can sometimes be a bit pricier, they are good to have on hand for your more health-conscious guests. Of course, if your crowd enjoys a beer or three, having some beer on ice is a must. Maybe some margaritas for the ladies, and a bottle or two of some nice wine is all you’ll need.

Having fun while at the party is of course what you’re going for. Good music and some dancing (if your friends are so inclined) are easy ways to make sure everyone stays entertained. Some party games (you can go old-fashioned with Charades, or be more modern with pictionary, trivia, or cranium-style are all good ideas) can keep your party-goers happy.

Of course, if you have the space, your place might boast a games table. Pool tables are always popular, but do tend to be very expensive. Ping pong is good if you have a garage or basement to store your table in. Several can play at once, which makes for a lot of fun for everyone – players and spectators alike.

Air hockey tables are also good choices. Of course, you probably will only have one of these, but they are lots of fun for you and your friends. A friendly tournament can be arranged, which is sure to be exciting for everyone. You can even organize prizes for those who stay in longest, which can be as simple as an extra beer or getting to take home the leftovers.

Parties are good fun and need not be a burden to organize and throw. As long as you have some good food, drinks, and fun things to do, you and your guests will have a great time. If everything goes according to plan, it will be something people will be talking about long after the party is over. You never know, your place may even become everyone’s favorite hangout. Party on!

Tennis Without The Lawn

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Table tennis, also known as Ping Pong is a sport that can be played indoors and outdoors as long as the designated table divided by a net is present and outdoor conditions are ideal to play. But generally, table tennis is an indoor sport. The basics of the game involve two or four players hitting a ball back and forth to each with the use of paddles. If you have seen a professional table tennis match you’ll be awed by the quick reflexes the players have.

Sometimes you can’t even follow the ball’s movement due to the fast plays. Expert players can even hit the ball in such a way that it creates a spin to the ball which makes the bounce hard to predict. But these professional athletes have such quick reflexes that they have quick reaction time allowing them to confidently hit and return the ball to the opponent.

As you probably have seen in sporting events as well as in the movies, table tennis is a big hit in East Asia particularly in China where a lot of great players come from. In China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, table tennis called Ping Pang Qiu while in Japan it is called Takkyu and in Korea the sport is referred to as Tak-ku.

To give you an idea how quick reaction should be, during plays involving Olympiads, the ball speed has been measured to reach a speed of 112.5 kilometers per hour or 69.9 miles per hour. This speed is pretty hard to follow especially on a small table of only 274 cm × 152.5 cm × 76 cm high. Speaking of the table, the table is more often painted green or dark blue.

Some tables are black though. There’s a net in the middle which rises up to about 15.25 cm or 6 inches. Even though the table is rather small, table tennis requires a lot of room for players to move and catch the fast balls freely. In competitions, you’ll see players moving as far away as 3 meters from the edge of the table.

This prompted the International Table Tennis Federation to designate an area of 14m long by 7m wide and 5m high for international table tennis competitions. Anything less could affect the player’s performance and might hinder their ability to play well.

Players used paddles to hit the balls. The paddles measure around 10 inches long and generally has a layer of rubber and sponge covering the paddle’s striking area. Recent studies and scientific research has been looking for the best materials that can be used on the striking surface to maximize the amount of spin and speed of the ball.

Just like other sports like baseball and golf, technology now plays a major role in optimizing the capabilities of players allowing them to perform in ways that seem impossible.

The table tennis ball is a small ball made of celluloid. Measuring 40mm in diameter, the ball is hollow and quality is determined by the bounce, roundness and consistency.

Originally the object of the game was to see who will be able to obtain a score of 21 first. But in 2001, the governing body of international table tennis set the 11 point scoring rule.

The race to 11 has been adopted ever since in international competitions. But the 21 point scoring system is still played by most individuals in the recreational to even small competition levels.

Utilizing the Ganzfeld effect to induce hallucinations without ping-pong balls?

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Well, I heard you can use the Ganzfeld effect of basically reducing your sensory input to white noise to induce hallucinations. A common way to do this is to cover your eyes with ping pong balls and turn on a radio to static. The issue is I don’t seem to have ping pong balls or anything that I can imagine would cut them in half. Are there any other ways to achieve the same effect with an alternative to the ping-pong balls?
