Table Tennis Rules to Play By

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Many people around the world enjoy the sport of table tennis (also known as ping-pong).  Perhaps you have advanced past the basic knowledge and now want to know the official table tennis rules.  The following should give you a good start on playing by the rulebook.

1. Table

The table must be rectangular.  The official size should be 2.73 m in length and 1.525 m in width, rising 76 cm from the floor.  The table can be made from any material as long as the average bounce of a ball is 23 cm when someone drops it from a 30 cm height.  The top of the table needs to be made of a matte, non-shiny finish and in a dark color with 2.74m white side lines.

2. Ball

The current table tennis rules dictate that the diameter of the ball be 40mm and shall have a weight of 2.7 grams.  It must be of a plastic element such as celluloid.  The regulation colors are either to be white or orange and to be in a matte finish.

3. Paddle

The paddle or racket can have any shape, weight, or size as long as the blade portion is flat and contains at least 85% real wood.  The sides of the blade need to be overlaid with rubber of a thickness no more than 2mm.  If an opponent changes his racket at any point in the match, both his opponent and the umpire are entitled to look it over.

4. Game and Match

The game is won by the first player to reach 11 points.  If, however, both players get to 10 points then the winner is the player who first gains a lead of 2 points.  The table tennis rules indicate a match should consist of the best of any certain odd number of games played.

5. Points

If an opponent does not make a correct return or correct service, then their opponent gets the point.  If the ball is served and passes over the opponent’s side of the table without touching it, then the opponent gets the point.  If the ball is hit twice in succession by a single player, then the opponent of that player gets the point.  If a player moves the playing surface or net, then their opponent gets the point.  If a player’s free hand rests or touches the playing surface while the ball is in play, then the opponent gets the point.  These are the official table tennis rules.

Rules to Play UK Bingo Live

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Different online bingo sites have different ways of dealing with their customers.  Players need a way of trying out an online bingo site.  Many players don’t like the idea of just having to join a bingo establishment without having a chance to test the software and tryout the site.  This is why many bingo establishments have various kinds of trial offers for new customers.

One such trial offer includes the use of demo games.  These demo games are basically free bingo games that the customer can play without the use of any money.  This allows the customer to try out the bingo site and their software.  Bingo software comes from different manufacturers and offers different kinds of graphics and features.

Players want to know before they commit to a bingo establishment if they like the software features and the other features that the site offers. If there is a feature that is missing in the download software that the player wants or if there are features that the player doesn’t like or want to use, the player wants to know that the problem can be solved before joining the bingo establishment. An irritating feature of the software that is there during the demo game will still be there after the player joins the bingo site.

Demo games not only offer players the ability to play bingo without real money, they also give new player the opportunity to try out the software and the bingo site. The player that doesn’t like the demo games doesn’t have to make a deposit. The most popular game on the internet is simple to play and easy to learn. The first time player doesn’t have to spend time learning or practicing to gain experience.

The live bingo game is not played simpler; players have to follow all the rules to win a bonus.  At a land-based game, the bingo download machine has ping-pong balls with the numbers on them. There are seventy-five balls in the American version and ninety balls in the British version. The bingo download machine mixes the balls and balls are drawn into an air tube.  The bingo caller takes the ball out of the tube and calls the number.  The player checks all of her cards/tickets for the number that is called.  If the number appears, the player marks it.  When the numbers marked formed the announced pattern, the player calls bingo.

When the numbers are verified, the player receives the prize. The winner can be one line in a regular game for the British version or a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line in the American version. Depending on the house rules, four corners may also be a regular bingo in the American version. The British version is played on a rectangular ticket consisting of three rows and nine columns, with five numbers on each line. The American version is played on a square five number by five number grids with the letters of the word bingo across the top.  Special games in the British version are for two or three lines with the coverall being called housie.  Special games in the American version can be for any pattern which consists of a letter, number or shape. No matter what the version, the player marks the number when it is called.

Families That Play Together Stay Together: a Personal Life Experience!

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Growing up my parents made it clear that enjoying time with family was very important! They didn’t come out and say it all the time and they didn’t need to. They did it with actions and as the saying goes, “Actions Speak Louder Than Words”. They did this by turning their basement into a home game room. It was done before I was born and games came and went all in the name of good old fashioned family fun! Now I’m the last of 10 children, 8 boys and 2 girls and I tell you this, our home game room worked wonders in keeping this family close!

When I was young just about every weekend I remember my brothers and sisters who weren’t living at home anymore, visiting. We’d play pool, pinball, pachinko, cards and more all the while listening to golden oldies on the jukebox. Before you start thinking we were rich, don’t, we were just a large middle class family. My dad worked very hard, often seven days a week and made just enough money to keep a roof over our heads and food in the fridge. My mom worked even harder taking care of us! The home game room functioned on it’s own keeping us at home base on most weekend nights!

The games were all bought second hand and didn’t work when my parents acquired them. Luckily my dad and a few of my brothers could fix them. That’s how we ended up with pinball games, a jukebox and an old bowling machine in our basement. Those were some of the best times in my life. Playing pool and games with my brothers and sisters into the early hours of the next morning.

Of course not every moment was perfect. We had our fights. Sometimes they were HUGE FIGHTS! But usually by the following weekend things were back to normal and we’d play together all night once again. On many nights we had to swallow our pride!

Those games taught us many life lessons right in our own home. They taught us about winning and losing graciously. Although tempers flared at times someone would step in and remind us that it’s just a game. We learned that cheating was wrong, especially with so many siblings watching over the games. We were taught to respect adults and that they would play first and we’d get our turn if we waited! Also that helped us to learn patience. There were so many life lessons learned in our game room that I’m probably only touching on a fraction of them.

We had so many great times in that game room with family and friends. On some nights you’d be the winner and others you’d be the loser. It’s the same as in life as an adult. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose but you have to keep your head up and try harder the next time.

All of those experiences made us become closer as a family. We learned how to deal with the different personalities of each family member and it’s kept us close to this day. No a home game room won’t solve every problem in the world. And it may not work for every family. But I firmly believe that “Families That Play Together, Stay Together”. That is coming from my own life experience.

Home game rooms are good for another reason also. They teach some great skills to children. From the hand-eye coordination from playing pinball to the angles, cut/slice shots and bank shots in pool. Those coordination skills come in handy when you’re older and are great to learn as a kid. With pinball you learn how to count numbers and keep score. In billiards alone you learn how to hold a stick, aim and shoot the balls and rack them up afterwards. Also for the youngest of children the pool balls are different colors with different numbers. I’ve never seen a child who didn’t LOVE to sit on a pool table and roll the balls into the pockets. (Just make sure you’re watching the child closely so they don’t fall off). Every table game is good for learning skills. That includes ping-pong, air hockey, foosball and shuffleboard also. You’d be amazed at what a child can learn by playing those basic but fun table games.

It’s a good idea to turn off the computer and video game once in a while and play a “real” hands-on game! Invite family and friends over on the weekends. Sure it doesn’t have to be every weekend but a couple times a month would be great. Show them your new trick shot. Have some laughs! And maybe a few tears will even be shed? No matter what happens it’s getting family together and sharing experiences what counts. And playing games with family and friends in a fun setting like a home game room is something every family could learn to enjoy!

In closing I’d like to say that “no” my family is nowhere near being the perfect family. We have our problems like every family does. We argue and we disagree on many things but we can still stay close. Somehow having a game room and playing games with family and friends seems to relieve that stress and tension and can make even the biggest of problems go away, at least for the moments we’re together anyway! So I’m convinced from my own experiences that:

How to Play Table Tennis?A Beginner’s Guide

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Are you wondering how to play table tennis?  You know it involves a ball and a table, but from there you may be clueless.  Let us start with the basics of the game.

Table tennis, which is also often referred to as ping-pong, is a sport enjoyed by many people of all skill levels.  In fact, it is the most popular sport using rackets in the world.  To begin, you will need some supplies: a table that is divided by a net, two small rackets or paddles, and a hollow lightweight ball.  You will also need at least two players.

For serious players, regulation sizes matter when learning how to play table tennis.  Balls must be 40 mm in diameter and the paddles must be made up of at least 85% real wood.  When the game first started out in Britain, it was played with champagne corks as balls, and books as paddles.  What you will use depends on how serious of a player you are and what your goals happen to be.

The game itself is very similar to regular tennis though it is on a much smaller scale and some of the rules differ.  Both sports require two to four players to hit a ball back and forth to one another over a dividing net.  The rules can be complex, but if you are a beginner then start with the basics and incorporate more as you learn how to play table tennis.

Most matches are played in a best out of three or best out of five setting.  Whoever reaches eleven points first and is ahead by at least a two-point difference is the winner of that game.  A point is scored every time the ball is put into play.  The player who serves (which is usually decided by a coin toss) tosses the ball into the air and hits it making it bounce at least once on his own side before it crosses the net.  If you hit a ball twice in a row, you lose a point.  If your shot hits anything other than the table (wall, ceiling, opponent) your opponent gets the point.

You want a nice steady back and forth flow to your game; whoever misses returning the ball loses the point.  There are many more in-depth rules you can study and learn about when it comes to knowing how to play table tennis.  Be sure both opponents agree upon the rules before starting a game.

Remember to shake hands and be a good sport after all matches, no matter the outcome.  No one likes a mean loser, or a gloating winner.  Now go have some fun, as you now know some of the basics on how to play table tennis.

A trip to the mall to play arcade games is worth it if you want to have fun. However, you can also play arcade games right in the comforts of your own home. There are many choices on the internet of websites that provide arcade game downloads.

You can even look for the game variety you are most interested in and you can download them right to your computer. You can download puzzle games, sports arcade games, old arcade games and even the most realistic shooting game right to your personal computer.

This means no more wasted time waiting in lines to play a single game and no more lines to change your bills into coins. Many websites offer arcade games for download. Some are free and some will charge you a little fee for their download services.

Games to Play: Recall 101

As with any dog training, you need to make it fun. If the dog is not having fun, neither will you. So why look at recall any different?  We are going to introduce two games that, if used properly, will start you down the road to having a dog that always comes when called. I’m referring to ping pong and hide and seek. For now, I want you to focus on playing these games inside your house. We will expand the range and the amount of distraction in the next blog… Recall Anywhere: Recall 102.

The first game we are going to play is ping pong. This game is very reminiscent to “monkey in the middle”, and requires two people and the dog.  The dog will be in the middle. If you don’t have another person, you can still make this game work.  We will introduce this technique in the next blog when we go outdoors to practice. So if you are solo, work on Hide and Seek, or call a friend!  Pick an area of your house with plenty of room. A hallway or large living room works great! Have each person start with 5 treats, stand at opposite ends of the room or hallway and take turns calling the dog back and forth till the treats are gone. The cue or command here is simply the dog’s name. I don’t use the word come. To me this is redundant, and just one more spoken word your dog has to master. Why not just build the understanding that when you call a dog’s name they should check in? This game does two things.  It teaches the dog that every time they recall to their name they get a reward (the treat) and also that when they can see you and hear you use their name, they need to come to you. I recommend practicing this game one to two times a day with each person having five treats. As with all training, it is not the amount of training, it is the consistency in which you train. So it is better to have one good, short, positive session every day for a month than to have 10 really long sessions that your dog tunes out after 10-15 minutes.

The second game we are going to play is Hide and Seek, and yes it is basically the same game you played as a kid. The major difference for the dog is that this game adds the element that they can hear you but cannot see you. However, the end result should still be the same as when playing Ping Pong…the dog needs to come when called. I know this will sound a little crazy, and it is not the first time I have been accused of being such, but you will need to have treat jars all over the house. I have 8 located throughout my house! Now that you have the positive reinforcement (the treats) located all over the house, you can begin playing the game. This game complements your everyday life, by adding times to practice each time you see a treat jar. For example, I keep one jar in the laundry room and when I am doing a load of laundry I call one of my dogs to me, and if they show up they get the treat. If I am upstairs in the bathroom brushing my teeth I call a dog, and if they show up they get a treat. Before too long, your dog realizes that even if they can not see you, but they can hear you, they need to find you.  Guess what?  They love this game too, since there is a reward when it’s done right.

To add a twist, incorporate another person into the game. Have one person hold the dog while the other goes and hides somewhere in the house with a Jackpot of treats (2 or 3) in their hand and then they call the dog. When the dog eventually finds you they get the Jackpot of treats! I will be completely honest; adults hide in really boring places!  So if there are kids in the family, this is one of the best times involve them. My six year old will actually make his bed so that he can pretend to be a pillow under the covers to try and trick the dog. What an unexpected benefit of dog training…a six year old that makes his bed!

Practice these games for a couple of weeks, but be aware that just because they work in the house does not mean they will work in the big, wide world outside the house. In fact, that is exactly what we will tackle in the next blog…how to recall effectively with distractions like those found outside your front door: Recall Anywhere: Recall Part 2.
