Puzzles & Games- To Sharpen Your Mind!

Monday, June 28th, 2010

I am generally very meticulous about the gifts that I get for kids. Since I am aware of the impact gifts have on kids, taking them on the right track makes a huge difference to me. Logic puzzles help in sharpening up the memory of children. These brain teasers serve dual purposes. They educate as well as entertain kids.

Last week my neighbour’s kid came rushing to me to show me her school grade card. Seeing her good scores I thought I would gift her kid’s jigsaw puzzles to motivate her. She is very dear to my family and spends most of her time with us. She is an intelligent kid and I thought a puzzle will be a suitable gift for her.

I always go for online shopping since I don’t have much time to spend on shopping. I went through the Internet to get her a suitable puzzle when I came across the puzzle collection at BIGshop. And to my surprise, I found a vast variety of discount puzzle games. I was totally confused as to which one to choose.

BIGshop offers a wide range of puzzles and other games for children. They include games ranging from Chinese Checkers and Desktop Ping Pong to Cosmic Cows and 3D puzzles. Some of the puzzles available will even be loved by grownups. After browsing through the entire collection of puzzles and games, I chose the 3D Puzzle Tower Bridge since she is a 5year old kid. It is an easy to assemble puzzle which can also be used as a decorative item. Her face lit up with a wide smile when I gave her the gift and she found the puzzle interesting.

So if at all you decide to gift a kid a really sensible gift, pick a puzzle from BigShop like I did.

Wii Stimulates The Mind

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

The Nintendo Wii works from head to toe to strengthen the mind and body.

The Nintendo Wii is different from rival game systems like Playstation and Xbox. The Wii doesn’t offer the high tech graphics as the Playstation 3 or Xbox, however, it offers an entirely new gaming experience for the player. With Playstation and Xbox, you’re seated stationary with only your fingers doing the work. The Wii is much more physically interactive than the other systems, which means your fingers aren’t the only body part in motion.

The Wii library of games offers an assortment of categories to suit most everyone’s tastes, such as puzzles, fitness, dance, sports, racing, and more! However, you won’t find many violent, bloody games in the Wii collection. Most are family games and are appropriate for any age level.

Childhood obesity is a major health concern today. Many schools throughout the United States have endorsed or included the Wii in their physical education programs. In 2008, the British government endorsed the use of Wii’s in schools after a pilot program in five schools in Worcestershire found that the Wii helped increase the activity level and heart rate in the participating students. The Wii offers the appeal of a video game and the benefits of exercise and physical activity.

The weather will no longer be an excuse not to exercise. With the Wii you can exercise in the comfort of your own home, even if it’s a scorching 100 degrees or a frigid -10 degrees outside.

There are many fitness games in the Wii library. One of the popular fitness games is the Wii Fit. The Wii Fit uses a platform called a balance board to calculate the player’s body mass index. The balance board is also used to in the training activities, which include yoga, aerobics, strength training, and balance games. The newly revised Wii Fit Plus was released in October 4, 2009 and offers a new calorie burning counter and a new training plus category with new yoga and strength training exercises.

The Wii Fit is not only for home use. Many hospitals use the Wii Fit to aid in physical rehabilitation and some nursing homes use it for their residents as a form of low impact exercise.

The classic Wii game is Wii Sports. Wii Sports includes the game of tennis, baseball, bowling, boxing, and golf. As an amateur tennis player, this game is not only fun for me, but it is also challenging. The follow-up game to Wii Sports is Wii Sport Resort. This newest addition to the Wii Sports family includes the games of sword play, kayaking, archery, ping pong, basketball, and more! Don’t be fooled! These games will really work your muscles and you may even find yourself breaking into a sweat. The Wii Sports Resort also includes the Wii Motion, which is said to make the controller more accurate.

Another incentive to play harder on Wii Sports Resort is the chance to see a celebrity in the audience. The higher your ranking, the more celebrity spectators you will see. You may even find yourself playing against a celebrity! I was once playing ping pong against Michael Jackson! He was actually pretty good.

The Wii games not only exercise the body, but also the mind too. There are many Wii puzzle games that test knowledge and strategy. One of my favorite Wii games is Big Brain Academy. This game tests and helps increase memory, math, logic, visual recognition, and analysis. This game can be played alone or in a group setting. Big Brain Academy is so fun that you won’t realize you’re working your brain cells!

Another fun brain game is Smarty Pants. This is a multi-player, team based game, which is fun for a family or a group of friends. The game tests your knowledge on current events, history, pop culture, sports, and more. But this game is more than just a pop quiz. They throw in a tug-of-war and a dance off to keep things fun.

The Nintendo Wii is more than just a game system. It supports physical activity, family bonding, learning, and healthy living.

5 Great Tips to Keep in Mind When Buying a Ping Pong Table

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

No matter whether you are young or old, everyone likes playing the game of ping pong on a ping pong table. And due to the popularity of this table tennis game, today many people prefer to buy an actual ping pong table. Besides a table you simply need to have your own paddles and balls and you are ready to play your favorite sports anytime.

Here are 5 great tips for buying a ping pong table:

1. Fixed or portable ping pong table

Before buying a table tennis table you need to decide whether you want a table with a permanent set up or something that can be easily packed and put back. For easy and frequent setup, you can go for a fold-up model with rollers for smooth movement. A roller table tennis table comes with brakes on the wheels that can be applied to stop the table moving around when in use.

2. Thickness of the ping pong table top

The right thickness of the table top is a must if you want to invest in a quality table for playing table tennis. The standard thickness should be 3/4″ or more. In the market you will also find table top with 1/2″ and 5/8″ thickness but this is too thin to provide much resistance to warping. Plus, ping pong table tops with less than 3/4″ thick do not help the balls to bounce consistently over the entire surface of the table. This makes it difficult to play table tennis in a professional way.

3. Material of the ping pong table top

Usually the thicker the table top, the better is the quality. Make sure that the thicker particle boards used for making a table top are of the best quality. You can also buy table tennis table tops made of resin material which offers higher resistance to warpage as compared to the regular particle board. Apart from the material also make sure that the evenness of support under the top as it is directly linked with the bounce quality of a ping pong table.

4. Features of the ping pong table frame:

The durability of a stiga ping pong table largely depends on the structure of the frame. A table with many connecting points within the chassis give better durability even with thinner legs and bracing. Don’t go for a table tennis table with thick legs or thin legs, but check out whether the connecting points are placed in the right places or not. Higher quality connecting points placed in the optimum places brings longer durability. You need to go for the proper design and support in a ping pong table to allow the table to hold together for long before loosening and collapsing.

5. Finish of the ping pong table top

The finish of the ping pong table must be smooth and even with no patches or rough spots. Put your eyes at table height from all sides and look for any bending or warping which can affect the bounce of the ball. Also check out for any rough edges on the top and sides as it might injure you while playing. If possible use a ruler to test the height of the bounce. Normally a standard ball should bounce about 23cm when dropped on it from a height of 30cm.

Just remember the above mentioned points while buying a stiga ping pong table and you an enjoy table tennis for years.
