Are We Teaching Our Children to be Stupid?

Did you know that a test in a Swiss Kindergarten (Basel) showed that 50 percent of the children were not able to do a simple somersault anymore? Did you know that by learning targeted and controlled movements as an infant, important structures are established in the brain? Did you also know that these structures then establish important connections between individual nerve cells? Did you further know that only this makes it possible for different areas of our brain to communicate? Did you know that this communication is the prerequisite for thinking? Did you know that the performance of the communication channels between the different cells basically creates the difference between “stupid” and “intelligent” children? Just to give you an example:

When children are able to perform targeted movements they are able to create an inner image of the outer space through their varied movement experiences. As soon as the child learns to categorize directions in relation to its own body (What is before, behind, right or left of me? What is above and what is below?), the experience of space is created. The child perceives itself within space and estimates the limits and the character of the space by moving through it in various different body positions and then stores these impressions as perceptions and experiences. Mathematical and geometrical thinking result from this. This is basically nothing else than rearranging, arranging and correlating values within an imaginative inner space. The layout of our body with its internalized perception of space is the basis for this.

All too often parents confuse conditioning with intelligence. Parents are often proud when three-year old children are able to operate a Gameboy or zap through the TV channels on their own. The trained offspring is then presented to friends and acquaintances while exclaiming: “Look how intelligent he/she is already!” Well, pressing a button does not qualify as an academic achievement. Any lab rat can do this after a few days of training and will then train the professor, who runs and gets a piece of cheese as soon as the button is pressed. Children that spend a lot of time in front of electronic devices or are “pacified” by the television are missing important steps in their development that can never be made up for again.

Acquiring basic skills for our movement opportunities and developing a broad repertoire of movements is crucial. As soon as children focus on one sport too early or are forced by ambitious parents to do so, they acquire what we call partial skills. Children may then be able to play excellent ping pong with one half of their body. The other half of their body, however, will not be capable of anything. The same goes for walking, standing or sitting properly. When physical movements are new to the brain it is activated and needs to work. When the movements become a routine the brain is deactivated and of no use. Therefore, a physical exercise needs to fulfill two aspects: a) the physcial movement of the body and limbs (cardio) and b) the mental aspects of involving the brain. This can be done in several ways, for instance by frequently mixing up physical movements and therefore confusing the mind. Running during a game of football is very different as running on a treadmill or by the lake. During football the brain is activated because it needs to monitor other team players, the opposing players, the field and of course the location of the ball. You can’t play the game without using the brain. Jogging is different because you don’t need your brain. In fact, many people use the time to listen to music and “motivate” the body to continue with an exercise that is boring to the brain.

Of course, the same applies in martial arts. If all you do is kicking, punching, blocking and rolling on the floor then you don’t have much brain left anyways. But if you do, you realize that this is boring. It doesn’t give you any “Food For Thought” and you only operate on the physical level of martial arts, the beginner levels. You need to dig deeper and move up to the next level, the mental level. This is where you learn about the principles, reasons and philosophies of martial arts. This is also where you really learn how to fight and apply the movements from the physical level. Granted the majority of martial artists prefers to operate only on the physical level because it is the easiest, hence the lowest level. But the real benefits are in the higher levels (mental and spiritual). Understanding these levels also make you a better fighter. This is where you can watch a Master perform a particular technique yet you still cannot do it for some reason. That’s the reason.

In order for your child to have all the chances for its personal development and to fully develop its predispositions it needs to have a broad base of possible movement options. The basis for the infrastructure of our central nervous system can only be secured through an extensive ability to move. The more different kinds of movement your child can perform, the broader and more pronounced this basis will be and the surer it is to develop its intellectual possibilities later on.

Of course what is written here is also valid for adults. An adult brain learns throughout its entire lifetime and, to follow this logic, you would have to have reached the highest point in the development of your motor skills at the end of your life and therefore have an excellent movement capability. Unfortunately, most people are back where they started many decades ago at this point in their lives. They are now washed, fed and have their diapers changed like babies. Therefore my advice is seize the day and learn new ways to move your limbs and you might get a little smarter too.

Simple Ways To Stimulate Your Brain

We used to think that mental performance can be enhanced or maintained by thinking. Crossword puzzles, a good book, or memory games were prescribed. Today, brain research is much further and we know how closely mental performance and motor skills are related. Although the attributes “smart” and “dumb” still play a little role, the flexibility of our thinking is much more important. How well can you think abstractly or “outside the box”? How is thinking connected to our physical movement skills?

Having A Party!

Halloween is a great time for young and old alike; although in recent years we adults sometimes go off the deep end on this holiday! For kids, however, it’s a fun time to be costumed, be with friends, and of course, collect candy.

Having a party is a great way to let the pre-teen kids burn off excitement without being on the street. The youngest children always are out collecting candy with their parents before dark. Pre-teens are usually trick or treating early in the evening, and want to stay out later like the teenagers do. The best time to have your Halloween Party is after your pre-teens have been out trick or treating. Then, they feel like they are staying up as late as the older kids, but yet you have parental control over their activities.

Party Activities and Awards

We all like to be awarded for achievement, and children crave the attention of rewards. Having a great selection of Halloween Awards or Trophies is a really neat way to create enthusiasm for your planned activities. Using a large and experienced company like Crown Awards is the easiest way to select trophies for the kids. They have a tremendous selection, and the staff is very knowledgeable if you have questions.

Planning your party so that everyone gets some sort of trophy or award can be a little tricky because everyone should get something. Using a point system always works out well; have parents assign points for most candy, best costumes and activity winners. The kids get individual awards for each category, and then a Halloween King & Queen Trophy and the end of the party. It’s Fun!

You can present awards for:

Attendance: Every child should get some sort of party favor. Crown has great, inexpensive Halloween ribbons and medals for under $2. or small cup trophies for under $4. that would be great for this.

Most Candy Collected: It’s always fun to dump out the candy and see who got the most and let them trade for their favorites. Ribbons for first, second and third place for the most candy collected would be appropriate.

Costumes: You have to be careful with this one, as the parents often may be responsible for the kid’s costume. You might want to award some sort of small trophy, {like Crown’s Oracle Lucite Wreath Trophy ($3.95)} to the winner and medals to runners up.

Games: One of the easiest games is the “Eyeball Relay Race”. First, divide the kids into teams. The first child of each team should be given a spoon along with a ping-pong ball painted to look like an eyeball. The object is to carry the eyeball in a spoon to the end of the course without dropping the eyeball, return, and hand the spoon and eyeball over to the next team-member. Every child in each team should have a turn before the game ends. The team that is done first wins the trophy. Since this is a team event, medals or ribbons for the winners is a good choice. If you have an appropriate outdoor area, you can substitute a balloon filled with water on a plate to be carried in the relay.

Activities: An oldie but goodie is the Trick or Treat Mr. Potato Head. Giving each child this toy and letting them create freaky faces and scary getups is sure to be a winner. You can give trophies like the Crown Award’s Lucite Star ($3.95) for the winner and ribbons for the runners up.

Halloween King and Queen: If you assign points to all the activities, the boy and girl with the most points is crowned the Halloween King and Queen at the end of the party. I really like the Idol Insert Star Trophy for this one, and I know the kids will like it too!

Planning, Planning, Planning

The key to any kid’s party is planning! So, if you take the time and use these suggestions, chance are the kids will have a great time and so will the parents!

Looking for the best in trophies and awards. Crown Awards has the largest selection of trophies and awards to suit all your Trophies needs. 30 Years of High Quality, Fast Service and Low Prices.

Children With Learning Disabilities Articles – How To Improve Reading Flow In Children With Learning Disabilities

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Children With Learning Disabilities Articles

Children with learning disabilities have trouble reading, and it is frequently noted that, even if they know the words, they often cannot flow naturally as they read.

There may be many factors involved in the failure of children with learning difficulties to read well, and I would like to touch on some of these in this article. As a practitioner who has successfully worked with these children for over 20 years, I feel that I have some practical things I can contribute to the debate on learning disabilities, especially with regard to the reading proficiency of these children.

Step 1: Make Sure They Can Concentrate!

If you want children with learning disabilities to improve their reading speed, the first thing you must do is to make sure they are concentrating properly. As a Behavioral Optometrist, I look to the visual system to solve this problem, because I know that and unresolved refractive problems in their eyes, like long sight for example, can dramatically affect a child’s concentration. Also, if a child is lacking in their focus or their eye coordination, this too can decrease their ability to concentrate. Children With Learning Disabilities Articles

In these instances, they put so much effort into just holding the page clear and single, they have very little available for anything else, and tired due to the extreme effort required to perform the task. Reading becomes tiring, difficult and frustrating for children with learning disabilities, and very often a set of reading glasses can be wonderful in these circumstances.

Other practitioners might look to ADHD medication, occupational or speech therapy or natural substances to improve concentration, but as an Optometrist, I believe that the easiest thing to try first is the right reading glasses. in my experience this treatment most often works for improving the concentration span of children with learning disabilities. Children With Learning Disabilities Articles

Step 2: Make Sure They Know The Words!

Children with learning disabilities almost always have a decrease sight word vocabulary, so when they read they are constantly coming across words that they do not know.

The vision therapy I have designed spends a lot of time directly working with visualization and visual memory, and we have had spectacular success over many years increasing children’s ability to retain spelling words.

Step 3: Help Them Control their Eye Movements!

Eye movement control is essential if a child is to flow in their reading. If you find that adding a ruler under the line of words helps their reading speed, then chances are that they have a significant eye movement problem. The ruler helps, sure, but how much more effective would it be to train the child’s eye movements so that they have accurate and adequate control.

In my therapy, I use a variety of techniques to help children with learning disabilities control their eyes correctly. I am able to help you do the same in the comfort of your own home, using balls, string, charts, marbles and a whole host of fun things.

The great news for these children is that, in addition to improving their reading speed and thereby helping their learning disabilities, training eye movements can also help their sport, especially for small ball sports such as baseball, cricket, tennis and ping pong!

But the greatest reward is that, if we train a child’s eye movements correctly, they will begin to flow and add expression to their reading, and they will also become far less frustrated and angry with reading. If it is easy to flow and draw the meaning out of our reading, it becomes a much more enjoyable task.

If you would like more information concerning children with learning disabilities, and what you can do to help your child overcome their learning difficulties, visit our website for tips, ideas and the entire therapy course which costs a lot less than you think! Spending Time With Your Children: Family Day, A Bonding Tradition

Monday, January 18th, 2010

What’s on your family’s plate? Work, volunteering, sports, school, groups, clubs, social activities, household chores? Do you ever wonder how you will keep your family bonded? I have worked as a child and family counselor for over a decade and keeping families bonded has been a particular goal of mine. Fourteen years ago when I held my daughter for the first time, the goal became personal. As my family grew, I knew I had to make a deeper time commitment in order to keep our relationships devoted. I wanted to avoid the pitfalls of my clients who found their families disconnected during crucial developmental stages. I could see that all the challenges my clients face could be challenges for me too. That’s when I came up with the idea of celebrating a weekly tradition in bonding called Family Day.

Just like Valentine’s Day or Thanksgiving, Family Day is a holiday of sorts that takes place on a weekly basis. We celebrate love, connection and the uniqueness of our family. We are committed to this day no matter what the obstacles: work, school, activities, sports or house maintenance. This is the day that we wake up as one and go to bed as one. Every moment is about togetherness, focus, and quality. We started the tradition in 1999. We kept the day simple but active since our children were three and five. They crawled into our bed first thing in the morning for cuddle time. Then we would head to the kitchen and make a special breakfast. After breakfast, we wrote up a list of activities on a scrap piece of paper. Everyone chose an activity giving each family member a chance to share his or her favorite games or events. I cannot tell you how many times in those early years that we played blocks, dolls or hide-n-seek but the activity was merely an avenue for relationship building.

The activities changed as the kids got older and included movies, hikes and day-long adventures. But when the day was done, we felt connected for the long, busy week ahead. Family Day might be a beneficial tradition for you. It has brought many of my clients’ families closer together, some that were on the brink of disconnection.

This is how it works:

Pick a day: We picked Sunday. A day is really a perfect amount of time to fulfill each person’s special activity. If you find a whole day is too hard on your schedules, then an evening could work too. For example, a Friday family game night might be fun or a Saturday pizza and a movie could work. Or expand on a time you already have in your schedule like church and breakfast.
Wake up together: When our children were young, they usually made their way into our bed so we woke up cuddling, wrestling, or playing a guessing game. Now that they are older, we meet on the couch for something hot to drink, chat or tell jokes then head for the breakfast table.
Breakfast Time: Every holiday has a feast. Our feast is at Family Day breakfast. Everybody has a task as we all work hard to make the meal into an event. My son learned how to make coffee (with supervision) by the time he was four and my daughter makes her “famous” pancakes. We do not hold back at this meal. Our breakfast is filled with goodies.
Family Day Journal: Although we spent years writing a list of activities on a scrap piece of paper, one Family Day I suggested we write our lists in a journal. From that point forward, after breakfast we bring out our Family Day Journal and take turns writing our special list. We even added a page of family news. We look back fondly on our list every so often remembering our past Family Days.
Family Day Activities: In our family, we come up with eight Family Day activities. Because there are four of us, we each get two choices. The writer gets to pick who is first, second, and third. The writer shares his/her pick last. Ideas will vary with your children’s age. My son tended to pick hide-n-seek when he was younger whereas my daughter tended to pick an art project. Now, they pick movies, games, or shopping. No matter the choice, we all must participate. Some suggestions are hide-n-seek, playing a board game at a coffee shop, planting a vegetable garden, baking cookies, making paper dolls, playing dolls, building a city with blocks, making up a scary story, going for ice cream, renting movies at home or going to a movie, painting each other’s portrait on canvas place mats, decorating bird houses, making Christmas gifts, carving pumpkins, rock climbing, hosting an International Ping-Pong Invitational, putting together puzzles, playing house, playing I-spy with a special shell we found at the beach on our last Family Day, playing bingo, going to visit family, adventuring out to a museum, telling tall tales, making clay models, and so much more. The list is prioritized in terms of time-line or we’ll put the ideas in a basket and draw. Although we parents do have some veto power (i.e. money or time constraints), generally anything the kids pick is accepted.
Commitment: We are committed to Family Day every week, however, there are always some exceptions. For instance, if I am going on a training weekend or my husband has a conflicting job, Family Day will be carried on by the parent at home or we will reschedule it in advance to Saturday. Our friends and family know that we are not available on Sunday because we are focusing on each other. After almost 10 years, I can say that Family Day was the best thing we ever established in our little clan.

Most children with autism have a passion for fidgeting some type of a sport game, which supports them to be on average ground and connect amid such a peers. The main purpose for teaching ping pong ball to children with autism, is that it develops coordination in the arms, wrist, and improves leg movement, motor skills, helps to focus to have a better attention span, and it gives an excellent work out of exercise and does not require expensive equipment.Teaching Autism

Introduce your child to the game, by allowing them to see a ping pong table, the net that goes across the table, the paddles and the white balls. Let your child hold the ping pong balls, the paddles to get the feel of them, until he or she feels comfortable holding these items. Start to bounce the balls slowly back and forth with the paddles. The paddles are light weight and so are the white balls for easy wrist action and for bouncing the balls back and forth.

Teach the individual with autism to hit the ping pong ball back and forth to the other side of the table with the paddle so it will be a back and forth hit touch, hit touch, over to the next side, across from the net on the table. By doing this, the person will have a better understanding of how to play. Fun Game Tables and the Life Lessons they can Teach your Children

Monday, December 28th, 2009

In today’s world, as parents, we need to make an extra effort to keep our kids active and to teach them to interact with other people face to face. This is something that parents used to do without giving it much thought. But today, many youth spend a lot of time watching TV or playing video games. Many of the interactive games they play online keep them sedentary and anonymous. A lot of the communication comes through online chat, games and texting instead of face to face. There are many things that parents can do to help their children in these two areas, but one solution to both problems, that your kids will enjoy, are game tables. These fun game tables come in many forms, so you can find something that the whole family can enjoy. Let’s take a look at some of the options available.

The air hockey table has been around since the 1970’s. This great game was an instant hit and quickly appeared in homes around the country. It only took a few years before it became competitive with world championships. A miniature version of actual hockey, the puck floats atop a layer of air that is blown through holes on the table top. You score by hitting the puck into your opponents goal. Though the concept is simple, there is also much skill that is employed in the top levels of the sport. This is a fast action game that people of all ages can enjoy. It is highly competitive and will have your kids returning over and over again, keeping them very active.

Foosball makes for very fun game tables and have been around since the mid-twentieth century. A table top version of soccer, it is also very competitive. It can be played with two players or in teams of two for a total of four players. This allows more people to interact at a time.

Pool tables have been around for a couple of hundred years and offer a myriad of games that can be played. You can play games that involve anywhere from two to many players. Though not as active as the previous two games, it is great for having fun and interacting with other people.

Of all the fun game tables out there, one of my favorite is table tennis. This game can be very active and can be enjoyed by players of all experience. You can play one-on-one, with pairs, or around-the-world which can involve as many players as you wish. Though around-the-world starts out slow, it definitely picks up pace as people drop out of the game.

If you cannot decide which table is best for your family, or each member has a different opinion, then you should go for the All-in-1 fun game tables. A variety of number of games can be available in different tables, but some of the higher quality tables have two or three games. These types usually involve tables that flip over, with a different game on each side. Such as pool on one side and air hockey on the other (a pockey table!). Most will at least include a third game, usually by placing a removable table top onto the pool side, you then have ping pong. Other tables will have up to 10 games, but a majority of them are smaller games like backgammon and poker, not active games as we have discussed.

It is obvious that any of these games will allow your kids to be more active, but it also encourages great personal interaction between the players, and as an added bonus it promotes good sportsmanship. So if you would like to teach your kids some of these essential skills in life, then an investment in any of these fun game tables could be just what you need.

Try not to take the game too seriously, because if the child loses or makes a mistake, he or she, may go away in tears. Instruct the child that it is okay to lose. One does not have to be a winner to enjoy the game.

It is imperative that the ping pong game is not controlled by rules or goals, which could confuse the child with autism and cause, he or she, not to want to play the game and walk away in tantrums or anger outbursts. Instruct the child to play the game, with love and encouragement and lots of patience.

There becomes a sense of peace and a positive detachment from every day reality, by playing the game of ping pong ball. This decreases the amount of tantrums and anger outbursts the child of autism might have with their disorder.
