9 Thought Processes (No.9) For A Table Tennis Serve
Pt4 how to make your opponent return your serve to where you want them to. Part 4 of a 4 part series. Serving today is an extremely complicated topic. This series of 4 videos explains and demonstrates 9 points which Jim Clegg feels all table tennis players should think about before they serve the ball.

If players have difficulty controlling long side spin serves, i would suggest that the player is pushing the ball back.
Long serves should be returning using topspin strokes and not push stokes.
The only exception to this is if the player is a defender type player.
One way of controlling the ball if pushing side spin is to push round the side of the ball and not the back.

Any coaching videos we do are dependent on Jim’s availability for filming which is difficult to arrange. I’ll forward your message on to Jim though. Thanks for the feedback.

I was wondering if you could do a video or give some advice on return of service, in particular I have a lot of difficulty controlling long sidespin serves to my backhand. thanks, the videos so far have been great!

my theory has always been to make my opponent come to the serve, and not put the serve to him!
Especially if he/she is very offensive slam oriented
ive seen many beginners repeatedly serve the same way to every opponent it’s not smart

Play the exact same serve but not into the backhand but just outside his playing side body width (crossover point). This could make him move left (assuming he’s a right hander) and play the return with his forehand. This should create the room for a fast drive wide across his forehand court or into the body. If this player digs a return from mid table he’s leaving himself wide open to a fast 3rd ball attack. Make sure your serve is not to long or he might drive it and put you in trouble.

Im a fast and heavy topspin player for my country wales. I was playing Reece tan from England and i was serving half long to his backhad and he was digging long and then i would spin fast down the line. If i wanted to switch him to force him round so i can punch were abouts would i serve too.
Thanx

Thanks for the support. I’m having a break for a little while now – video editing overload and i’m not sure about Jim’s schedule but service return videos seem like a good idea. I’ll speak to Jim and see what we can arrange about doing some videos on service return in the next couple of months.
